The Polk Arts Alliance honors Polk County Commissioner, Melony Bell for her commitment, advocacy and tireless work as County Commissioner to support the cultural arts sector in Polk County.
On July 24, 2012 after several years of advocacy, under the leadership of Commissioner Melony Bell, on behalf of all the Cultural Arts Organizations in Polk County and with the recommendation of the Tourist Development Council, the Polk County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the reinstatement in the County ordinance, the original 15% of the first two pennies of the bed tax, be allocated every year to fund a portion of the arts through a rigorous application and grants process. This was the first dedicated funding for the Arts in Polk County. The Polk Arts Alliance was able to establish the annual Artist Hall of Fame thanks to Commissioner Bell and the Grants funding.
