In recognition of Women’s History Month, the J. Owens Academy of Fine Arts, Inc. Bese Saka Festival will celebrate the role that women have contributed to our society through a musical concert. Women’s History Month colors are purple, green and white. York writes the purple stands for justice, dignity and visionary thinking. Green signifies new beginnings, hope and growth. York further states that white has been associated with equality.
The women’s movement has brought down many barriers for this country by working together to make their visions become realities. Thus, through their tenacity, perseverance and ingenuity of the women’s movement the concert’s theme is “This Little Light of Mine.”
The Owens Academy’s guest choir will be the Florida Memorial University Ambassador Concert Chorale and band. We are honored to have our first female guest conductor, Dr. Argarita Johnson-Palavicini. Other artists include Sandi Russell, guest soprano vocalist; Gloria Brooks, pianist; Dr. Terry Lance, festival pianist. The Sankofa Chorale will host this event and will feature the Owens Academy Young Artists, Nikki Gadson, folk singer, Sherwood Davis, and tenor vocalist.
