Harrison School of the Arts Schmidt Competition Results

Good news from the Harrison School of the Arts Chorus Department this year. Over the last four years, Harrison chorus students have competed in the Schmidt Youth Voice competition in Palm Beach Florida. Our first year opened our eyes to what high school students are capable of, and we have progressively improved each year, earning spots in Masterclasses, scholarships and last year our first national award. As a finalist or winner, students are eligible for need-based financial aid to study voice at the college level; Liam Anderson (class of 2020) earned second place and currently receives $27,000 per year to continue his studies at the Eastman School of Music.
This year was easily our best year yet, and we wanted to pass along just how hard the following students and their teachers have worked. They competed against students form New Jersey, Texas, Georgia, and California, as well as many others from Florida. We have included a handful of video links along with their awards below. Schmidt participants:
  • Carter Mays, class of 22, student of Roger Lucas
  • David Burrows, class of 21, student of Nick Folkes
  • Gabi Lopes, class of 21, student of Claudia Bolano
  • Riley Stamper, class of 21, piano student, student of Deborah Lucas
Masterclass participants (three were selected this year)
  • Presley Philpot, class of 21, student of Deborah Lucas, earned a masterclass with Grammy Award winning opera singer Marylin Mimms
  • Elizabeth Stump, class of 23, student of Christina Needham, earned a masterclass with Jason Lester, Dean of Music at Palm Beach Atlantic University
Most Promising Sophomore Award
  • Elizabeth Stump, class of 23, student of Christina Needham
Encouragement Award (Honorable Mention, two were selected this year)
Finalists (10 were chosen this year, all are eligible for scholarships though the Schmidt foundation)
  • Camille Diaz, class of 22, student of Deborah Lucas
  • Emma Stamper, piano student, class of 21, student of Deborah Lucas
  • Elizabeth Stump, class of 23, student of Christina Needham
  • Carol Kittner, class of 21, student of Christine Stanley
Third place overall- eligible for need based financial aid to a school of her choice
