This exhibition The Art of Romaine Brooks, on loan from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, brings together 18 paintings and 32 drawings by the American expatriate artist Romaine Brooks (1874-1970), a number of which have not been seen for decades. An extraordinarily independent woman, Brooks crafted an androgynous appearance and a unique artistic voice that challenged conventions of how women should look and behave; her rebellious ideas extend to many of the portraits she painted in the 1920s and underline the…

This extraordinary show of Marc Chagall’s work is the only one of its kind in Florida and the only one in the country that pairs his Fables of La Fontaine etchings (1952) with his Story of Exodus lithographs (1966). Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was born into a poor Jewish family in Russia and began studying painting at age 20, where his distinctive fantastical style centering on images from Russian folklore, family history, and his own childhood began to emerge. He moved…

Conversing with Reality celebrates the most recent paintings of contemporary visual artist John Jacopelle. Devoid of preconceived ideas and direction, Jacopelle’s work takes a stream-of-consciousness approach, where the “act of doing” or process is equally important to the finished piece. Rendered in ambiguity yet painted with clear definitiveness, organic shapes, rhythmic lines, and glyphic marks develop as the artist works upon his paintings, leaving each piece open to the viewers' own interpretation. Jacopelle’s work has been exhibited up and down…

The early exiles were largely middle and upper-middle class, so they were not as motivated by improved economic prospects to be found in the United States as were those exiles who came at a later date. Indeed, the later generation of artists who came to Miami in the 1990's were very much looking for more opportunities, while looking for personal and artistic creativity as well. The exodus continues to our day. Those who came after the early 2000's are mostly…

SUN + LIGHT is a collection of works from the series Everyone Loves the Sunshine by contemporary visual artist Charles Williams. Captured through emotionally charged and compelling imagery, works featured in this exhibition juxtapose Williams' own personal encounters, past and present, with the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's. In doing so, he attempts to strike a balance between both the peaceful and violent protests of the movement and of varied expressions of power. Williams work has been exhibited nationally and has…

This extraordinary exhibition, drawn entirely from the collection of the Reading Public Museum, explores the path to Impressionism through the nineteenth century, and the complex relationship between French Impressionism of the 1870s and 80s, and the American interpretation of the style in the decades that followed. Paintings and works on paper help tell the story of the new style of painting which developed at the end of the nineteenth century—one that emphasized light and atmospheric conditions, rapid or loose brushstrokes,…
