Bese Saka Festival: From the Fields to Carnegie Hall

Dr. J. Owens Academy of Fine Arts, Inc. spring concert is themed “From the Fields to Carnegie Hall” begins with an exciting presentation with dejembe and traditional drums, followed by folk songs, concertized choral and solo spirituals, gospel, classical vocalists and instrumentalists. The Saturday, May 21 concert at 7:00 pm is the culmination of a full day of workshops and rehearsals.
The Sankofa Singers and Owens Academy Young Artists are pleased to welcome Bishop and the Entertainers and Tri-Faith Gospel Singers, in addition to the following special guest artists.
Dr. Gloria Robinson-Oturo is an international performing artist, scholar and a founding board member of the Negro Spiritual Scholarship Foundation.
Karl Van Richards is a virtuoso pianist, scholar and Bethune Cookman University professor.
Gale Murphy Jones is a concert pianist, vocalist, composer and director of the Negro Spiritual Scholarship Foundation.
Dr. Roland Carter is guest conductor, eduator, researcher, composer-arranger, and pianist, affectionately known as the “Dean of Choirs.”
Vanessa Hawkins, soprano, has performed with Orlando Opera, Orlando Philharmonic, Negro Spiritual Scholarship Foundation, and Master Singers Ensemble.
Javan Jackson is an oboist and Southeastern University freshman business major.
The workshop registration fee of $10 includes the Friday and Saturday workshops, and lunch. The Saturday evening public concert is FREE. Priscilla Robinson will serve as Mistress of Ceremony of the concert.
