Shining Silk: Arts of Japan Opening Reception

Enamored by the exquisite beauty of Japanese embroidery since 1998, needlepoint artist Nancy Sutherland hopes to enlighten others and spark interest in Japanese embroidery and culture when she showcases her talent at the Japanese embroidery exhibit, Shining Silk: Arts of Japan hosted by the Lake Wales Arts Council October 3rd – November 18th. Sutherland will display 25 items embroidered with metallic threads on handwoven silk complimented by Japanese pottery provided by the Polk Museum of Art.

Sutherland began her formal study of nihon shishu in 1998 with noted needlepoint artist Audrey Francini and professionals at the Japanese Embroidery Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Six years later, she was awarded a Graduation Certificate in recognition of “The Completion of the Ten Phases of Traditional Japanese Embroidery.” Her work has been exhibited at the Art Museum of the University of Kentucky and the Japanese Embroidery Center.

The Japanese embroidery exhibit, Shining Silk: Arts of Japan is located in the Michael Crews Gallery at the Polk State College Lake Wales Arts Center, 1099 State Road 60 East, Lake Wales. Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., Fridays 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Closed on weekends.
