Future Retro: Polk Museum Celebrates the Great Age of the American Automobile

September 20, 2014 - December 6, 2014

Elia Russinoff, "Design Proposal: Two Door Sports Car," 1953.

September 20 – December 6, 2014

Polk Museum of Art this fall will open “Future Retro: Drawings from the Great Age of the American Automobile,” an exhibition that comprises more than 100 drawings from the collection of Frederick A. Sharf. The exhibition, which is on loan to PMoA from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, will be on view September 20 through December 6.

The drawings showcase the beauty and ingenuity of American automotive design during the decades following World War II, a landmark period in car styling. An eclectic mix of illustrations, from preliminary sketches to fully rendered works, provides a rare glimpse into the creative process at some of America’s premier car companies.

Dating from an era when speed and power were increasingly important factors in automotive sales, these drawings show reference to the emerging technologies that influenced postwar car design, like airplanes and rockets.

The exhibition will be celebrated at a reception on Friday, September 19. The evening, which is open to the public, includes a lecture about the exhibition, light hors d’oeuvres and cash bar. Museum members may attend the reception for free; guests are $10.

Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-5pm, Sunday from 1-5pm. The Museum is closed to the public on Mondays and major holidays.

Museum admission: $5 General / $4 Seniors / Students admitted FREE. Museum Members and children age 5 and younger are admitted FREE.
